Editorial policy

The Mower Shed publishes one kind of page: an entry that answers a single question about the upkeep of a golf course and the machines that work on it. Everything on the site is written by this desk and checked against sources a reader can obtain.

Sources

An entry names the documents it read. The main ones are the green section material of the United States Golf Association, the soil surveys and wetland determinations of the Natural Resources Conservation Service, the extension publications of the agricultural universities in turf growing states, the service and parts literature of mower and irrigation manufacturers, and the wetland and water programmes of state environmental agencies. Where two sources disagree, the entry says so and gives both readings.

Numbers

A figure appears only when a public source gives it, and the entry says which source. When no source gives a figure, the entry describes the method and leaves the number out. Costs, green speeds and yields are treated the same way.

Corrections

An entry is revised when a source changes or when a reader sends a document this desk did not have. A revised entry keeps its number and takes a new check date. A factual error is corrected in the entry itself, not in a footnote.

Independence

The Mower Shed carries no advertising, no sponsored entry and no affiliate link. No manufacturer, club, university or agency pays for coverage, and none of them sees an entry before it is published.
