Reading a Fairway Soil Test Before Fertiliser

A fairway soil test reports pH, organic matter, phosphorus and potassium. A greenkeeper reads those numbers, then builds the season plan around them.

A fairway soil test reports four numbers that decide the fertiliser plan: pH, organic matter, phosphorus and potassium. The greenkeeper reads them against the species on the fairway, the soil texture, and the season ahead, then sets rates and timing. The test does not prescribe a product. It sets limits. A greenkeeper who wants the same discipline in a smaller kitchen garden, or who simply wants to see how another trade reads its own records, can look at a neighbourhood kitchen on Clifton Street and the way it keeps its menus and notes in order.

What does a soil test measure on a golf course fairway?

A standard fairway test reports pH, buffer pH, organic matter by loss on ignition, available phosphorus, exchangeable potassium, calcium, magnesium, cation exchange capacity, and base saturation. Most labs add sulphur, boron, and a texture estimate. The USGA Green Section has published the same short list for decades: pH, organic matter, phosphorus, potassium, and the cations.

Each number answers a different question. pH says whether nutrients are chemically available at all. Organic matter says how much of the nitrogen and water the soil can hold. Phosphorus and potassium say what the plant can draw on now. Cation exchange capacity says how well the soil holds what is applied.

A fairway is not a green. The rootzone is native soil, not sand, so organic matter runs lower and CEC runs higher. A reading that would alarm a putting green crew is ordinary on a fairway. The same lab report gets read two ways depending on which surface it came from.

How often is a soil test taken on a course and at what depth?

Most courses sample fairways once a year, in late autumn or early winter, after growth has slowed and before the dormant season. Some sample every second year on fairways and every year on greens. The interval follows the budget and the history of the property, not a fixed rule.

Depth is four inches on fairways, six on some native-soil sites. Greens are sampled at two to three inches because the rootzone is shallow and the thatch layer sits on top. A sample taken at the wrong depth reports the thatch, not the soil.

The sampler walks a zigzag across the fairway and pulls 12 to 15 cores into one bucket. Cores from a wet spot and a dry spot go into separate buckets, because averaging them hides the problem. The lab needs about a cup of mixed, air-dried soil per sample. Results come back in two to three weeks, which is why the sampling date sits on the calendar before the fertiliser order.

The habit is the same: write the number down, date it, and compare it to last year.

How does organic matter in a green change the reading of a soil test?

Organic matter is the number that shifts every other reading. On a sand-based green, organic matter above four percent starts to hold water and nutrients the rootzone was built to drain. Phosphorus and potassium readings rise with it, not because more was applied, but because the soil holds more of what is there.

On a fairway, organic matter between two and four percent is normal. Above that, the fairway holds moisture longer, disease pressure climbs, and the aerification schedule tightens. Below two percent, the soil dries fast and potassium leaches with every heavy rain.

The lab reports organic matter as a percentage by weight. A change of half a percent between years is worth a note. A change of one percent is worth a change in the plan. The greenkeeper compares the number to the aerification and topdressing records for the same year, because those two practices move organic matter more than any fertiliser does.

Turning pH, phosphorus and potassium into a season plan

pH decides the first move. Below 5.5 on a fairway, phosphorus locks up and the lime goes down before any fertiliser. Between 6.0 and 7.0, the plan proceeds. Above 7.5 on a calcareous soil, phosphorus and iron become the problem and the plan changes again.

Phosphorus is applied only when the test shows it low, because it moves slowly and stays in the soil. Most fairway programs skip it in a normal year. Potassium is applied through the growing season, split into two or three applications, because it leaches. The rate follows the test, the species, and the traffic the fairway carries.

Nitrogen is not on the soil test in a useful form. It moves too fast to measure. The greenkeeper sets nitrogen from the organic matter reading, the colour of the turf, and the growth rate, then adjusts through the season. The soil test sets the floor, not the ceiling.

What the numbers do not say

A soil test reports what is in the soil, not what the plant is taking up. Tissue testing fills that gap, and most courses run it alongside the soil test on greens and fairways. The two reports are read together.

The test also says nothing about compaction, drainage, or shade. A fairway with good pH and adequate potassium can still fail if the soil is compacted at two inches. The greenkeeper walks the fairway with the report in hand and checks the numbers against what the turf looks like.

The season clock

The sample goes to the lab in November. The results come back in December. The fertiliser order goes out in January. The first application lands in March, when soil temperature holds above 50 degrees Fahrenheit for a week. The second potassium split follows in June, the third in August. The next sample goes out the following November.

That is the whole cycle. The soil test is the first entry in the season's record, and every later decision refers back to it. A greenkeeper who skips the test is guessing. A greenkeeper who reads it is planning.
